Backing and Parking Safely

One out of four vehicle collisions can be blamed on poor backing techniques
Backing crashes are very common and very preventable. According to the National Safety Council, backing collisions cause over 500 deaths and 15,000 injuries per year.

You can help prevent collisions in parking lots by practicing and sharing these safe backing tips:

  • Avoid Backing Up
Whenever possible, plan ahead to avoid backing. This is especially important for School Buses.
  • Move Forward
Always attempt to park in a manner that will allow you to pull forward when leaving. Back in when you arrive, rather than when you are ready to leave.
  • Get out and Look
Walk around the back of your vehicle before backing and scan the entire distance. Get in and start backing immediately after checking behind your vehicle – any delay increases the likelihood of someone getting behind your vehicle.
  • Be mindful of your Blindside
Avoid blindside backing. Back from the driver’s side.
  • Don’t be Distracted
Parking lots are busy places. It’s important to stay focused on safely backing. Many backing accidents occur when drivers are distracted by their phones, by their in car technology, or by their passengers.
  • Leverage technology
Take advantage of back-up cameras, back-up warning systems, and other technology that may be available in the car. These technologies are designed to assist the driver, but should not be solely relied upon.

Backing up safely requires planning, caution and a strong awareness of the area surrounding your vehicle (especially behind you). Take your time and help to make parking lots a safer place for everyone!
